A Suzhou woman was convicted of embezzling 1.64 million yuan ($237,641) from the city health center where she worked and spending it all online tipping her favorite hunky live-broadcasters.

The 27-year-old, surnamed Ni, was sentenced to five years in prison and received a 340,000-yuan fine.

Ni was hired on as an accountant to the center in 2015. City prosecutors said it was in June of that year she began funneling hundreds of thousands from the publicly-funded center to fund her addiction to online entertainment.

Namely, showering virtual currency gifts on handsome live broadcasters bought with real cash.

The court found that over the course of a year Ni had diverted 1.64 million yuan from the hospital's coffers with fake receipts, bills and forged signatures.

Addictions to live-broadcasting, whose business model is built around the exchange of virtual gifts bought for cash, are not limited to young adults.

A 14-year-old boy from Zhejiang Province spent his family's entire savings of more than 30,000 yuan on gifts for hosts of live-streamed gaming shows.
