Germany-based carmaker Audi AG on Thursday apologized for using an inaccurate map of China during a presentation at its annual press conference in Germany.

"The map offended Chinese people. It was a serious mistake for which Audi wants to sincerely apologize," the company said in a statement sent to the Global Times.

And this is also a profound lesson from which Audi learns, said the statement.

At the press conference on Wednesday, Audi reportedly used a map that excluded Taiwan, South Tibet and Aksai Chin in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, which are all considered by China as integral parts of its territory.

Some Chinese netizens used social media to denounce Audi's mistake and demand an apology. One comment on WeChat said that it's "a serious mistake that should not have happened for a brand that has been in China for this long."
