A freak explosion in East China saw two boys suffer moderate face and body burns as they set fire to ants near a septic tank in their community.

The 13- and 9-year-olds from Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province were burned on more than 10 percent of their bodies from the explosion on May 14, doctors told the media.

Parents of the children suspect that the children must have lit built-up methane gas from the nearby septic tank in their Xiganganzhi community.

The explosion was large enough to blow off a large cement slab covering the tank, media reported.

The flames seared the boys' faces and burned off their hair, leaving them writhing on the ground, according to witnesses.

The parents are blaming community management workers for not emptying the tank and allowing for the combustible gas to accumulate.

Employees with the local Municipal Management Office claim they are not responsible for the accident. The community septic tank is emptied once a year, employees said, adding the last cleaning was in January.

Authorities are investigating the case.
