Overseas modern dancers and performing troupes from countries and regions including the US, Finland, Hungary and India will take part in the two-week long 9th Beijing Dance Festival (BDF) in July, festival organizers announced on Wednesday.

First started in 2008, the festival is one of China's largest annual modern dance events.

Co-hosted by institutions including Beijing Dance LDTX and the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center and funded by the Beijing Culture and Art Fund, BDF will include a series of modern dance-related activities including performances, lectures and workshops from July 18 to 30.

According to a BDF press release sent to the Global Times on Thursday, the festival's first week will focus on education. During this time, 16 modern dance veterans from 14 countries and regions including Germany, Australia Hong Kong and Taiwan will offer lessons to dancers at the Beijing Institute of Performing Arts.

Starting from July 25, BDF will kick off its Performance Week, with modern dancers and troupes from home and abroad putting on shows, both classic and experimental, every day.

The programs to be shown during Performance Week will include Sale by the SOL Dance Company from Israel, Trikonanga by Indian dancer Hema Bharathy and Amidst the Wind, a special performance by Hong Kong's City Contemporary Dance Company celebrating the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to China.

Moreover, the festival will also include a section titled "Youth Dance Exhibits."

According to festival organizers, the five shows in this section were selected from among a number of programs by 213 young choreographers from 31 cities around the world.
