At least seven people were killed and 66 injured in a blast near a kindergarten in Fengxian county in East China's Jiangsu Province on Thursday afternoon, local authorities said.

Two people died at the scene, and another five died later in hospital, the county government said on its Weibo account.

Among the injured, nine remained in critical condition as of 7:45 pm, it said.

The blast happened at around 4:50 pm near the kindergarten. No children or teachers from the kindergarten were injured as they were having class, the local government said.

The cause of the blast is still under investigation, Shi Peiming, an official from Fengxian's information office told the Global Times, refusing to give more information.

But a witness also surnamed Shi told the Global Times that the tragedy was caused by an explosion of a gas cylinder at a roadside stall. The impact of the blast sent people flying several meters, according to the witness.

Footage posted online showed dozens of people, including children, lying on the ground, some of whom were bleeding. Blast of this magnitude near kindergartens is rare.

Local police and officials from related government departments are on the site for rescue work.
