China has made historical changes and discovered a path suited to its national conditions as it chose the socialist path started by Russia's October Revolution in 1917 and combined the fundamentals of Marxism-Leninism with the country's reality, a senior Party official said.

Liu Qibao, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and head of the Party's publicity department, made the remarks at an  October Revolution and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics workshop in Beijing last month, the People's Daily reported.

The October Revolution introduced Marxism-Leninism to China and helped create the Communist Party of China that blended with China's workers' movement, Liu said.

A century ago, China was a weak, poor, easily bullied and invaded country, Liu said in the speech.

"But now, we have never been so close to the goal of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and we have more confidence and capabilities than at any stage in our history to achieve this goal," he said.

"There were multiple reasons for the failure of the former Soviet Union's socialist path, including conservativeness and rigidity, but the most fundamental reason was the deviation from the Marxist-Leninist path and the socialist path started by the October Revolution," Liu said at the workshop.

The workshop was held ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, also known as the October Revolution.

That revolution propelled socialism with a great leap from ideal to reality and from theory to practice as the then-Soviet Union became the first socialist country in history, Liu said.

The historic legacy of Russia's October Revolution and the huge achievements of socialism in the former Soviet Union cannot be wiped out by its collapse, Liu added.

The former Soviet Union's Communist Party allowed its people to experience unprecedented modernization in industry, agriculture, education, science, society and daily life, Liu said in his speech.

Through industrialization and agricultural collectivization, modernization helped Soviet Union become a world industrial power, he added.

The October Revolution fundamentally overthrew the exploitation system, according to Liu. The revolution had influenced many countries to adopt socialism. And one-third of the world's population once lived under the socialist system.
