Thursday marks the 60th anniversary since China and Cambodia established diplomatic relations. After 60 years of friendship the two countries have set an example for neighboring countries in Southeast Asia on how to maintain fruitful and long-lasting diplomatic relations, Chinese observers said.

Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Xiong Bo said China and Cambodia would build a community with shared future and they have made great contributions to building a new international relationship, which is respectful and a win-win model, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Wednesday.

Gu Xiaosong, deputy director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Xiamen University, told the Global Times that "China and Cambodia are 'iron buddies.' They have the friendliest relationship in Southeast Asia."

Historical records show China and Cambodia have had exchanges for at least two millennia, and in recent decades Cambodia has offered steadfast support to China on South China Sea-related issues, Gu said.

"Over the past 60 years, no matter how the domestic political situation has changed, Cambodia has never stopped being friendly with China," Shen Shishun, an Asia-Pacific expert at the China Institute of International Studies, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

"China and Cambodia always support each other on issues related to their core interests, and the two have a high trust and tacit understanding," Shen said.

No matter whether it is under the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, or the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation, Cambodia always plays a significant role, Gu said. "Cooperation on diplomacy, national defense and economy can be expected."

On Tuesday Xiong visited the University of Cambodia to deliver a speech on the Belt and Road initiative. Xiong told the students the opportunities the initiative could bring to Cambodia and ASEAN, reported.

"Over the past 60 years, leaders of the two countries have always made efforts to maintain their friendship, and overcome many obstacles in order to lead the countries and their citizens toward progress, prosperity, and harmony," Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said during a gala dinner in Phnom Penh earlier this month, Xinhua reported.

Bilateral ties between China and Cambodia were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation in 2010, after which communication and trade between the two have developed rapidly, reported.

Under the bilateral cooperation framework, China has assisted Cambodia's agricultural sector through human resources development, laboratory establishment, donations of material, equipment and machinery, and research projects, Cambodian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Veng Sakhon told Xinhua on Friday.

China has also been involved in restoration work on Cambodia's ancient temples at Angkor Archeological Park since 1997. It restored the Chau Say Tevoda and Ta Keo temples, Xinhua reported.

While more Cambodians are coming to China to study and work, more than 1.2 million Chinese tourists visited Cambodia in 2017, reported.

Example in ASEAN

"Some countries like the US are seeking to restrain China by taking advantage of Southeast Asian countries. However, relations between China and Cambodia will continue to enhance cooperation," Gu noted.

"Cambodia has a relatively objective point of view concerning China-ASEAN relations and has been supporting regional peace and stability," said Gu.
