A Vietnamese court on Thursday sentenced a local 43-year-old man life behind bars for transporting 8,000 pills of synthetic drug from Laos to Vietnam.

The People's Court of central Ha Tinh province passed the sentence on Nguyen Nhu Ba from central Nghe An province, who was arrested in Ha Tinh in January when carrying 8,000 pills of drug, Vietnamese online newspaper VnExpress reported.

Ba confessed that when purchasing agricultural products in Laos for resale in Vietnam, he was hired by two Lao men to transport the drug with a wage of 1 million Vietnamese dong (43.5 US dollars).

According to Vietnamese law, those convicted of smuggling over 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kg of methamphetamine are punishable by death. Making or trading 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal drugs also faces death penalty.
