Shanghai’s English proficiency first in China

Shanghai's English proficiency leads all cities in China for the fifth consecutive year, reaching its highest level of proficiency for the first time with a score of 57, according to EF English Proficiency Index Report Eighth Edition (2018) issued by EF Education First on Wednesday, Shanghai Morning Post reported Thursday.

According to the report, China's English proficiency scored 51.94 this year, ranking 47th place among all countries and regions, which is a slight decrease from 2017, when China scored 52.45. English proficiency in China's public utilities, health and medical, mining and energy as well as automobile sectors is higher than the world average.

Sweden returned to the top of the list with 70.72 points, closely followed by the Netherlands (70.31) and Singapore (68.63). Melissa Lam, a representative of EF Education, said that the report covered 88 non-native English speaking countries and regions. More than 1.3 million people participated in the test, with an average age of 26.
