An employee of an animal rescue station in Xiangyang, Central China's Hubei Province tried to save a black cat that climbed high up a tree, but it turned out he was the one that needed rescuing.

The man climbed some 15 meters up the tree, but didn't even get close to the cat before he found himself in a precarious position. He could not go higher or come down for fear of falling.

Passersby finally called the fire department and firefighters initiated a nighttime rescue. They hoisted a tall extension ladder into the tree, put a rope around the man's shoulders and guided him down to level ground. By then the cat was long gone.

"The cat panicked when it saw the onlookers and spot lights and jumped to another tree and just ran down on its own," a firefighter surnamed Zhang told the Global Times.

"I didn't expect to get myself into such a predicament," the man told firefighters.

Netizens left amusing comments at the man's expense. "Thank you for your care and love, but I don't need it," one net user wrote quoting the cat.

"The scenery above is so good. Good luck, silly man," another wrote.
