The first 5G+AI minimally invasive heart surgery in China was completed by two hospitals in South China's Guangdong Province with the support of Huawei technology on Wednesday, Chinese news site reported.

With 5G networks' high speed and low latency, Guangdong General Hospital built an AI supplementary medical system that could create a VR model of the patient's chest and heart, and then remotely conduct the actual surgery in The People's Hospital of Gaozhou, 400 kilometers away.

The surgery took nearly three hours on a 41-year-old female patient and was intended to cure her congenital heart disease, noted.

Huawei has proposed the application of 5G in the medical field since last year. Wang Yufeng, R&D Director of Huawei Wireless X Labs, gave a presentation at a forum in October.  During the presentation, Wang took wireless medicine as an example and stated that the critical parts of a surgery only need 10 to 15 minutes to be finished by an attending doctor. With wireless remote medical technology, a doctor could conduct 10 surgeries at the same time, according to the report.
