People’s Daily launches People’s Premier League

 On Thursday, the operations center for People's E-sports was officially established at the offices of the People's Daily Press in Beijing. A roadmap for People's E-sports industry planning, e-sports industry media strategic planning and the People's Premier League was also released.

On April 24, 2017, the Asian Olympic Council announced the inclusion of e-sports as an official competition. At the end of 2017, the International Olympic Committee announced that e-sports will be considered as a sport. In 2018, the Chinese team won two gold medals and one silver medal in the e-sports section of the Asian Games in Jakarta. Then at the League of Legends World Championship (S8), China's IG won the first championship in the League of Legends Pro League division.

On April 1, China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS) confirmed 13 new occupations, which include e-sports players and e-sports managers. According to statistics from, the digital arm of the People's Daily, 443,000 people work in China's e-sports industry. However, there are only 50,000 e-sports players and e-sports managers, while the number of job vacancies has reached 260,000. By 2020, that gap will rise to 500,000. 

Zhu Kai, the director of's sports department and the president of the People's Sports, noted at the conference that e-sports has become an inseparable part of competitive sports, and that People's Sports will fully support the development of the industry.

According to a survey on China's e-sports industry in 2018 by iReasearch, China's e-sports market is mainly composed of client e-sports games and mobile e-sports games. In recent years, the market size of client games has changed little but mobile online games have been on the rise. In 2017, the overall market value exceeded 65 billion yuan ($9.67 billion) and is expected to reach 99.3 billion yuan in 2019.

The People's Premier League was also revealed at the conference, and will be co-hosted by People's E-sports and local governments. The People's Premier League will include several popular e-sports games, develop a wider range of semi-professional and amateur events, enrich the domestic competition system and continuously work to bring in fresh blood to professional e-sports events.
