A golden retriever somehow retrieved a discarded mobile phone during its walk by a river, enabling the dog's owners to help police track down the family of a man who had attempted suicide.

Police in Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu Province had already taken a middle-aged man who was found unconscious by the river bank to the hospital on Thursday, Jiangsu TV station reported.

The man was apparently in coma and carried no identification, so police were unable to identify him even after scanning his face and comparing it to records in the Nanjing police database.

The man's phone didn't have a password, so the dog owners opened it and discovered a conversation between the man and his families about his intention to kill himself. The couple immediately turned the phone over to the police.

The police soon deduced the phone belonged to the man they had taken to the hospital and contacted his family.

The man's families explained that he had a serious illness but couldn't afford the expensive cure, so he decided to end his life to relieve the family of their financial burden.

The report said that the man was finally persuaded by the police not to take his own life.

Chinese netizens praised the golden retriever, who initiated an unlikely chain of events that helped save the man's life.
