Thin teen hero rescues toddler trapped in pipe too narrow for firefighters

A 14-year-old boy in Hebi, Central China's Henan Province is being hailed a hero after being suspended upside down and lowered into a narrow cement shaft to rescue a three-year-old girl who had been trapped for more than four hours. 

A video of the dramatic rescue watched by dozens of onlookers, shows the thin teen, surnamed Wang, getting a quick training session by frustrated firefighters who could hear the toddler's weakening moans but couldn't get to her.

The boy was lowered into the shaft headfirst with ropes tied around his feet. It took him several attempts and 30 minutes before the baby and the teen were finally pulled to ground level. 

Great cheers are heard from onlookers as the toddler is seen in the video wrapped in blankets and being carried to an ambulance.

The hospital reported the girl is in satisfactory condition and suffered no life-threatening injuries. 

"The teenager deserves the admiration of every adult for his courage and selflessness," a netizen wrote on the Chinese Twitter-like Sina Weibo. The video has been viewed 10.6 million times.
