Following some recent foreign media reports that have taken a tough line toward China and described the country as a threat, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry said such an attitude is unnecessary, and used the metaphor of China as a panda, which has a gentle temper and is loved by others despite its large size.

Hua Chunying, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said during a press briefing on Thursday that some Western officials and media reports have shown paranoia about China, smearing the country and appearing to be unable to tell right from wrong. Her comments came after an Australian expert wrote an article saying that the China debate is close to losing all sense of rationality and proportion.

Meanwhile, a recent article by Fareed Zakaria called the New China Scare, which was published by Foreign Policy, said that today's China is a remarkably responsible nation on the geopolitical and military front. "As he said, we've not interfered in other countries' internal affairs, nor occupied other countries' land or broken any international rules. We only defend ourselves when our sovereignty and security are under threat," Hua said.

Hua compared China to a panda, which despite its large size has a gentle character and is loved by companions, adding that foreign reports portraying China as a threat are only based on the country's increasing power and influence.

"Even if it's Kung Fu Panda, it has a strong sense of justice and is loved by its companions," she said, noting that paranoia toward China is a highly dangerous disease.

As long as countries can abandon a zero-sum approach and a cold war mentality, as well as showing mutual respect and an open attitude, nations can achieve mutual benefits and win-win relations, Hua noted.
