A total of 26 people were detained and 17 police officers injured during the protest in Kiev, capital of Ukraine, the Kiev police communication department announced on Tuesday night.

"The most active participants were detained and taken to the police department... their actions will be given a legal evaluation," the department said in a statement.

Thousands of people from four different protesting groups reportedly gathered outside the parliament building on Tuesday morning.

The clash was triggered by a group of protesters' attempt to set up a tent on the roadway. The police wanted to dissuade them from committing unlawful acts, but the protesters began to brawl.

"Despite all the warning of the law enforcement officers, the organizers and participants of the rally did not comply with the police's requirements. Instead, they fought, used batons and threw stones," said the statement.
