The Chinese government has always required Chinese overseas citizens to abide by local laws and not engage in any form of illegal activities, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, in response to reports that a Chinese national was arrested for trespassing at Mar-a-Lago, the property of US President Donald Trump.

Geng Shuang made the remarks in response to the matter at a routine daily press conference on Thursday.

Florida police arrested a Chinese national on Wednesday after she allegedly trespassed and took photos at Trump's Mar-a-Lago property. Lu Jing, 56, entered the estate and was asked to leave by security, Michael Ogrodnick, a spokesman for the Palm Beach Police Department, said in a statement, US media The Hill reported.

"She returned and began to take photos, at which time the Palm Beach Police Department responded and took her into custody," Ogrodnick said, adding that authorities determined Lu's visa had expired.

Lu invoked her right to an attorney and is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail for loitering and prowling, Ogrodnick said.

Trump is expected to travel to Mar-a-Lago on Friday to kick off a roughly two-week stay for the holidays. He and the rest of the Trump family were not at the property at the time of the incident, The Hill reported.

Lu's arrest is the second such case this year of a Chinese national being arrested at the property. Zhang Yujing, the first one, was detained in March and convicted in September of trespassing and lying to US federal agents.
