The National Library of China (NLC) in Beijing announced on Monday at a press conference that it will hold a series of events to celebrate the Spring Festival, including exhibitions, concerts and various activities related to the festival's folk customs.

As a prelude to the celebration, Chinese New Year concerts featuring symphony orchestras, choirs, and Chinese Opera will be held at NLC starting from Thursday. On the first day of the Chinese New Year, which falls on January 25 this year, NLC curator Rao Quan will give gifts to visitors at the library to express wishes for a happy new year. The 20-year tradition will officially kick off the celebrations at NLC.

In addition to exchanging Chinese New Year wishes with visitors and the library's staff, visitors are also invited to take part in activities such as writing Spring Festival couplets, which they can take home with them.

Other activities include setting off firecrackers, traditional paper cutting and figuring out lantern riddles, which will be in both Chinese and English.

With the coming of the Year of the Rat, various exhibitions will be held throughout the holiday to introduce the symbolism of the rat in Chinese culture and the folk customs surrounding the Spring Festival.
