Chinese director Chen Sicheng's new streaming drama Detective Chinatown, a spin-off of his renowned movie series of the same name, has received rave reviews on Chinese media review site Douban, as well as became a hot topic on social media in China. 

At a promotion event on Monday, Chen noted that the streaming series ties into his upcoming new movie Detective Chinatown 3, which is set to premiere on January 25. 

Chen also explained that Chinese streaming sites are slowly shifting from longer content to shorter high quality works, which is why the show has only 12 episodes.  

According to Wang Xiaohui, chief content officer of streaming site iQIYI, which streams the drama, the series follows the shorter series model used in the US and that its connection to the movie is a great example of how to fully develop a cultural IP.
