Flight attendants of Philippine Airlines (PAL) have ditched their stylish uniforms for a couture protective gear amid the threat of the COVID-19.

The Philippine national flag-carrier said it has collaborated with local designer Edwin Tan to create personal protective gears for its cabin crew during the "COVID-19 season."

"The protective suits have the fit and function that will allow cabin crews to perform their duties," PAL said in a recent Facebook post.

Tan said he fused protection, comfort and "a subtle branding of PAL" in designing the personal protective equipments (PPEs).

"We didn't have time to print or embroider so we came up with the idea of mimicking or reworking the Philippine flag logo of PAL," Tan added.

Tan said he used a non-porous material for the PPEs, "a material with substantial weight to give it a better fall than generic PPEs."

Thousands of domestic and international passengers were stranded in different parts of the archipelago after Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte placed the entire main island of Luzon under an "enhanced community quarantine" (ECQ) in mid-March.

In line with the ECQ in Luzon, local airlines announced the cancellation of flights for a period of a month.

Many provinces in the central and southern Philippines have also imposed lockdowns in an effort to stop the spread of the contagious disease.

PAL has suspended its regular domestic and international operations until April 30, in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak and a series of travel bans and restrictions imposed by local and foreign governments.

The Philippines now has 6,459 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 428 deaths and 613 recoveries.
