About 25 people have been killed and 87 others wounded in Sudan in days of clashes between rival ethnic groups in Port Sudan, medical sources told AFP Tuesday.

Most of the casualties were shot while some had knife wounds, the sources added.

Violence broke out in the Red Sea city on Sunday evening, the state SUNA news agency had reported, quoting medics who treated the wounded.

Police sent in reinforcements and have imposed a night-time curfew, it added.

Clashes have continued for the third consecutive day, despite the increased security presence, witnesses said Tuesday.

Fighting began when people from the Nuba tribe, who had been demonstrating against a new governor, entered a district of the Beni Amer tribe, witnesses said.
