A number of Chinese regions including Beijing, Shanghai and South China's Guangdong Province have released guidelines on medical equipment purchase, urging local medical institutions to impose a curb on imported medical devices, so as to support homegrown products.

In a latest move, authorities in Guangdong said they will set up a provincial-level list for imported products. The list will only include foreign medical equipments whose domestic counterparts cannot fulfill relevant requirements. Also, the list will be reviewed every year and foreign devices could be removed from the list once a corresponding homegrown equipment meets the standard.

Guangdong authorities also urged local hospitals to follow the principle of fair competition in procurement and not to restrict qualified domestic manufactures from participating in procurement bids.

The local government will also shorten the approval process for accommodating certain large-scale homegrown medical equipments from 20 workdays to 8 workdays.

Currently, about 14 percent of medical equipments used in Guangdong medical institutions are manufactured in China, according to a report by news website 21jingji.com on Tuesday.

In addition to Guangdong, Beijing and Shanghai municipalities and other provinces including East China's Shandong, Fujian, Jiangsu and Zhejiang have also issued similar guidelines to encourage the purchase of made in China medical products.
