The US has recorded over 100,000 new coronavirus cases, the most ever in a single day since the pandemic began, amid the intense 2020 US presidential election battle, according to US media reports.

Data by The Washington Post showed that 104,004 new cases were reported on Nov 4, a day after the US held its presidential election.

The uncontrolled coronavirus pandemic was both a top issue and a threat as millions of Americans turned out to vote, the New York Times said, adding that the escalating pandemic, especially in some states, was seen as critical in determining the presidential results.

Infections in Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina and Nevada, among others have been on the rise in the past week, according to the Washington Post report, as the nation’s total case toll looks set to hit the 10 million mark soon.

On Nov 4, former Vice President Joe Biden was declared the winner of Michigan and Wisconsin, two key swing states that President Trump won four years ago, New York Times reported.

It’s perhaps not surprising to see lingering uncertainty in the 2020 campaign, as a record-breaking number of Americans voted early or by mail due to the pandemic, but many could not be counted until afterward, said the New York Times.
