The world's oldest professor, famed biochemist and founder of the China Anti-aging Bio-chemical Studies program, Zheng Ji celebrated his 109th birthday on May 6 at Nanjing University, with more than 200 guests from all over the world. He told his guests at the birthday bash, “Among all earthly things, good health comes first as the most valuable asset in life, and money and fame rank lowest on my list. Living a healthy life is the happiest accomplishment of my life.”
Born into a farmer's family in Nanxi county, Sichuan Province in 1900, Zheng was admitted to Southeast University at age of 22. He was sent to the United States to study phytochemistry (plant chemistry), physiology and nutriology under a Chinese government scholarship and returned to China in 1934 with a master's degree and PhD from American universities.
Zheng founded China's first bio-chemical research center to train bio-chemical postgraduates, and worked at Nanjing University from 1959 until 2000 when he was 100.
Zheng said he had planned to work even longer but was prevented from doing so after he fell and was hospitalized for 105 days. After that, he wasn't able to return to work, but remained active in his academic circles.
He has also recently published a book, Tips to Longevity: A 100-year-old Professor's Experience in Maintaining Good Health and Longevity, in which he pointed out that life's value lies in giving not taking. And his basic tips? They're common sense – a healthy simple diet, exercise and a calm, modest lifestyle.
