Cambodia adopts first electronic Khmer dictionary

The first electronic Khmer dictionary has been put into use to implement the demand of using the Khmer dictionary in Information and Communication Technology ( ICT), local media reported on Thursday.

This electronic Khmer dictionary will help train human resources in education system and promote the reputation of the nation through using the Khmer language in ICT, Ngoun Van Chanthy, director of Cambodian Buddhist Institute, was quoted as saying at the launching ceremony.

Cambodian Buddhist Institute cooperated with a Phnom Penh-based private computer company to put the Khmer dictionary into software.

It also showed us to have national unity of using the words and globalize the Khmer language into ICT, he said, adding that this is the first time in khmer history to put the Khmer dictionary into electronic one.

We will set up this electronic Khmer dictionary in the computer for free of charge, Ly Sopheap, manager for Chay Hok Computer Company, said.

Min Khin, minister of the cults and religion said that his ministry helps every step in the promotion of the Khmer language and also support for creating this electronic Khmer dictionary.

The first Khmer dictionary was published in 1967 and it was edited by the former Cambodian Buddhist patriarch Choun Nath, therefore Cambodian people called Choun Nath dictionary.
