Farmers in eastern Zambia's Katete District have been told to practice conservation farming in order to counteract the effects of climate changes, the Zambia News and Information Service (ZANIS) reported on Wednesday.
Katete District Commissioner, Eleman Mwanza, said conservation agriculture would help preserve land for sustainable use both for the present and future generation.
He said there was need for farmers to use appropriate agricultural technologies to scale up diversisification in agricultural products as a means of cushioning the impact of climate changes.
Speaking when he officiated at this year's district agricultural show whose theme was "Challenge of Change", the District Commissioner further urged farmers to start preparing for the farming season early in order to have good harvests.
He further called on farmers in the district not to sale on their maize, saying it would be an embarrassment to the district to start asking for food aid after selling everything.
"It is important to reserve enough maize for home consumption. It will be a big embarrassment to us as a district to start calling for food aid when this year our good Lord has blessed us with favorable rainfall for agricultural production," Mwanza was quoted.
