A Myanmar domestically produced beer -- Dagon Beer -- has won four international gold medals, including a grand gold in prestigious international beer competition of Monde (World) Selection Awards 2009, the local weekly Yangon Times reported Wednesday.

The 48th Monde Selection, held in Belgium's Brussels, was sponsored by the International Institute for Quality Selection.

In 2007 Monde Selection Beer and Food Competition, the Dagon Beer had grabbed four gold medals, including two grand ones. Besides, it has also pocketed two high international quality trophy.

Dagon Beer is run by the Dagon Brewery Co., Ltd. which is a joint venture between the Myanmar Economic Corporation, Myanmar Golden Star Company (MGS) and the Singapore-based Brew Investment Company.

The Dagon Beer started production in 1998 and has quickly become favorite among consumers.

Beer is a rare commodity in Myanmar before 1988. After the adoption of market economy in 1988, a number of locally-produced beer brands came into being.

There are numerous brands of beer in Myanmar, including Myanmar Beer, Mandalay Beer (now a private venture), Dagon Beer as well as Tiger Beer, ABC Stout and Anchor Beer. They are produced under license from the parent brands.
