Canadian native Arturo Gatti's death on July 11th was declared Thursday to be a suicide, according to an autopsy performed by Brazilian authorities.

The boxer was found dead in a rented condominium in Brazil where he and his family were vacationing. It was originally registered as a murder.

Local police in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco found Gatti's body with evidence of strangulation marks and blood stains on his wife's purse.

However, the local media reported on Thursday that the fighter hung himself in a stairwell, using the purse to end his life.

The 37-year-old boxer was born in Italy. He was a former light weight champion of the International Boxing Federation as well as a World Boxing Council junior welterweight champion.

Gatti's suicide came less than two weeks after a fellow world champion boxer Alexis Arguello decided to take his own life.
