The death toll from typhoon "Pepeng" (Parma) has already reached 375, nearly 40 more than that of storm "Ondoy" (Ketsana) which devastated Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog late last month, the National Disaster Coordinating Council reported on Wednesday.

NDCC executive officer and concurrent Office of Civil Defense administrator Glenn Rabonza also said that "Pepeng" injured 185 others and another 48 remain missing and are subject of search, rescue and retrieval operations.

Of the 375 deaths, Rabonza said 287 are from the Cordillera Administrative Region, 75 from Ilocos Region; eight from Central Luzon; one from Southern Tagalog; and four from Bicol Region.

As of Wednesday, Rabonza said about 675,681 families or 3,136,965 persons have been affected by "Pepeng" which caused flooding and landslides. Of the number, 17,506 families or 83,432 persons are staying in evacuation centers.

Also, Rabonza said that a total of 36,349 houses were damaged by "Pepeng." He said that the damage to infrastructure and agriculture has now reached 8.142 billion pesos (about 175 million US dollars).

"Pepeng" started wrecking havoc on Oct. 3, causing an initial damage. On Oct. 9, "Pepeng" returned causing massive damage in the Cordillera Administrative Region and in Ilocos Region.

Records from the NDCC indicated that "Ondoy" has claimed 337 lives, injured 308 others and 37 remain missing. It has damaged about 10.5 billion US dollars in infrastructure and agriculture and affected over four million people.
