Located in northwest China's Gansu Province, Zhangye was one of the four counties in the Hexi Corridor (the Western River) in ancient times and was once known as Ganzhou. Situated in the central part of Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province, Zhangye is adjacent to Jinchang City to the east and connected with Jiuquan area to the west, which makes it the crossroads that link the southern and northern routes of the ancient Silk Road.

Zhangye danxia landform is both the largest and is typically found in China's arid areas. Danxia landforms are red rocks characterized with steep cliffs. Because of the arid climate, the Zhangye danxia landform differs from that of south China. In Zhangye it is very dry and desolate, without any vegetation, so geologists call this "window lattice and palace-shaped danxia topography".
