Vimbayi Kajese has been broadcasting the CCTV-9 early morning news programs since August. After completing her undergraduate studies in the US, she moved to China in 2006 to pursue a master's degree in International Relations and Diplomacy. A stint in PR then led to the anchor gig, her “dream job.” When not working, Vimbayi is a well-known figure around town, and is quite the fashionista. We talked to Vimbayi about her sense of style and where she likes to hang out.

Where do you shop for clothes?

For specific parties, I go to Prety Party for dresses. I also like to shop at DeeKay in Wanda Plaza. Recently, I like The Bauer Company because of the horse-riding style outfits. Other than that, I don't really have a specific brand I shop for. If I see something nice and pretty, I'll get it.

What do you do to make your style standout?

I think anything off the shoulders is good. It's inspired from the 80s. I don't wear necklaces. God gave us a natural neckline and bones so it just looks good even without wearing necklaces. In Africa, it is also a style to keep your neck straight and tall.

Where do you get your make-up?

I go to Hong Kong. But for brands, I use M.A.C. I've been using MAC my entire life. I'm not a big fan of wearing make-up though. I wear make-up because of my job and only when I go out.

Hats, clothes, purses or shoes?

Shoes first. I like Steve Madden and Nine West. And I have no intention of changing my purse.

Any fashion tips?

I think to look good in your clothes, you first have to feel good underneath. You have to feel good about yourself. Eating healthy, working out and maintaining a healthy body is very important. I don't believe in freezing and breaking your feet. I mean in winter, I still cover up. I wear my dress inside and cover up. Always bring an extra pair of shoes. It's not a good idea to walk around or wait for a taxi in high heels. I always bring an extra pair of shoes for walking between clubs and the taxi.

How do you maintain your shape?

I have done a Pilates class about twice a week for three years, I swim and do some light weights. I eat lots of boiled and steamed vegetables and fish. I also squeeze my own juice. If I don't have much time, I go to Eden Juice Bar for smoothies.

Favorite cuisine?

Lots of potatoes or Belgian French fries, you just can't beat that stuff. And I think it's also because my parents used to grow potatoes on the farm when I was young. I know it's kind of against what I said about eating healthy but I think once in a while is good. I also like Tibetan food because it's a nice blend of Chinese and Indian food. Mediterranean is also good, like feta cheese.

Favorite restaurant?

I like to have brunch at Elements Fresh, especially their salmon salad and smoothies. I usually go to the restaurants in Sanlitun, like Pho Pho, Luga's and Union Bar and Grill.

What is your favorite city in China?

Lijiang, Yunnan Province. It's a quaint and delicate village. There are not very many tourists and I think it is a city that perfectly romantizes the old China.

How long are you planning on staying in China for?

Oh a long time. I plan on staying here for a long time.

What do you want to do next?

Well I've just started to be an anchor for CCTV-9 but I would love to do an African travel show next. Just anything that combines travel and food.
