Li Changjiang, the former chief quality supervisor, has been appointed deputy director of the working team to crack down on pornography and illegal publications.

China News Service reported Sunday that Li, who stepped down last year after the tainted milk product scandal that shocked the nation, visited Jiangsu Province on December 24 and 25 in the capacity of his new post.

The report said Li offered positive comments on the province's efforts to crack down on Internet and mobile phone pornography.

Li stepped down last September 22 as the director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine after the dairy product scandal that sickened infants.

The scandal was discovered after infants in Gansu Province, who had been fed infant formula from Sanlu Group based in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, were diagnosed with kidney stones.

The product was adulterated with melamine. Products of other dairy companies, including Mengniu and Yili, were also adulterated.

At least six infants died and over 300,000 others suffered kidney problems and other symptoms after consuming the tainted milk powder.

Wu Xianguo, the Party chief of Shijiazhuang, was removed for delaying the reporting of the incident, and Li resigned taking the blame for supervision default, the Xinhua News Agency reported last year.

Li, 65, had served in various positions and was appointed the director of the administration in April, 2001.
