Festo designers, no stranger to autonomous robot creatures, created a blimp robot penguin. In the Festo promotional video, those lovely little blue-eyed penguins swimming around the tank are autonomatic. They can navigate and interact with a diver without fail. They can even swim backwards, which is impossible for a flesh-and-blood penguin.
Another highly expected high-tech design is a huge, interactive metal ball in an area called "Energy Source" of the city. The ball is powered by cheers from the crowds.
When the cheers are loud enough, the ball can sway up and do circular movements which fit in perfectly with a well-known Chinese saying referring to a sacred mountain in northern China near Confucius' hometown which goes like this: “When people are of one mind and heart, they can move Mt. Tai."
The ball has a diameter of three meters, weighing 1.5 tons with 400,000 LEDs. Its voice control system enables it to respond to voices.
The German pavilion is composed of three floating spaces and one cone-shaped structure. Covering a floor space of 6,000 sq m, the pavilion is the biggest one that Germany ever had at an Expo and is estimated to receive 45,000 visitors a day.
With "balancity" as its theme, the pavilion seeks a balance between urban development and nature. The "Harbor," "Garden," "City Square" and "Energy Source" areas form part of "balancity" at the German Pavilion. The term "balancity" is a combination of the elements "balance" and "city."
