Wen Qiang loses appeal, death sentence upheld

The Chongqing Higher People's Court upheld its verdict of May 21, rejecting the appeal of Wen Qiang as well as four other defendants.

A former chief of police in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has lost his appeal against his death sentence.

Wen Qiang, 55, a former head of the Judicial Bureau of Chongqing Municipality, had been found guilty of rape, accepting bribes, harboring criminal gangs, and possessing a huge amount of unaccountable assets.

The Chongqing Higher People's Court upheld its verdict of May 21, rejecting the appeal of Wen as well as four other defendants.

The verdict calls for Wen to be deprived of political rights for life and executed, with all his property confiscated.

The other four defendants, including Wen's wife,Zhou Xiaoya, received sentences ranging from eight years to twenty years in prison.
