When mentioning Poland, perhaps the first thing that pops up in our minds is Frederic Chopin. Indeed, the Polish native pianist/composer has been a global music icon and, as might have been expected, named as an image representative of the Poland Pavilion.
As today is the National Pavilion Day of Poland and a special date to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of this arguably the greatest piano composer in history, it is the best time to 'Hangout' at the Poland Pavilion and discover what the home of Chopin has been showcasing to the world at the Shanghai World Expo.
Among all the dazzling pavilions in the Euro Square, the Poland Pavilion might well be the first to catch your attention with its innovative appearance, no matter if it is bathed in sunshine or moonlight. The 200th anniversary of the birth of Chopin adds even more color to the present splendor of the pavilion.
The most impressive feature of the Poland Pavilion rests in its facade, where the abstract and irregular exterior is covered with flowery cut-outs, inspired by the Polish folk art of paper-cutting.
"A series of common cultural elements between China and Poland are reflected through the presentation of the Poland Pavilion," said Slawomir Majman, the Commissioner General of the Polish section at the 2010 World Expo. "The art of paper-cutting is one of them."
During the daytime, the uniquely designed facade allows sunlight to filter through the special walls, creating rich lighting effects. When dusk falls, it shines with different colors, leaving a deep visual impression on visitors.
As the design team of the Poland Pavilion put it: "the Earth nowadays is filled with visual experiences. It is a world that is dominated by visual images and communication methods."
The highlight of the Poland Pavilion on the Pavilion Day featured the "Let's Dance Chopin", the worldwide premiere of a creative dance show inspired by Chopin's music, in the evening at the Expo Park where people from all walks of life got together mingling, celebrating and enjoying the Polish-flavored musical feast.
