The Indonesian government will start building 1,000 temporary shelters for the flood victims in Wasior town of West Papua province in eastern Indonesia in coming weeks.

"The temporary shelters will be built in Ramiki, Rado, Kaibi and Kaibuow," chief of housing development of the Ministry of Public Works, Amiruddin, said in West Papua on Thursday.

The floods on Oct. 4 killed at least 149 people and internally displaced over 10,000 others, the National Disaster and Mitigation Management agency said..

Amir quoted by Antara news wire said his staff had started drawing up a map of the temporary shelters and their location.

"We will also have soldiers helping us opening the land. The first area to work on is Rado and we have mobilized heavy equipment to the location," he said.

He estimated the temporary shelters would be finished in three weeks.

Meanwhile, an NGO, Emergency Response Action Institute (ACT), has announced its intention to build other temporary shelters.

ACT's Program Director Bayu Gawtama said the shelters consisting of temporary housing complexes and emergency public facilities were expected to accommodate around 100 families.
