Russia has no intention to hold talks with Vietnam on the restoration of the military base in Cam Ranh Bay, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin said on Friday.

"No talks are under way, and we are not planning talks with our Vietnamese partners," Borodavkin said at a news conference, dismissing reports that the Russian Navy's Main Command has proposed re-launching the Cam Ranh base.

Another anonymous source from Kremlin also dismissed the alleged Russian plan of restoring the base as a military installation, saying this issue was not a central one in bilateral relations, the Interfax news agency reported.

According to the report, the source said Vietnam "is interested in air defense and naval systems" among other military-technical cooperation.

In 1979, Moscow and Hanoi signed an agreement on using the Cam Ranh Bay port by Russian ships for free for 25 years.

In 2002, two years before the agreement expired, Vietnam proposed a 300-million-US-dollar payment as the annual lease for the base. Russia refused to prolong the agreement and then withdrew its servicemen from the base.

The port is over 4,000 km away from Russia's Far Eastern city of Vladivostok.
