Churches in Harbin

The local people of Harbin in Heilongjiang Province began to believe in Catholicism from the opening of trans-Siberian railway in the early 20th century when Canadian and French missionaries arrived in the city. The first Catholic Church was built in 1901 in Harbin and there were over 10,000 believers. During the Russian revolution, a large number of Jewish people went to Harbin and built Synagogues there. Due to these reasons, today visitors can find a lot of churches in Harbin, belonging to different religions.

Saint Sophia Cathedral

The Saint Sophia Cathedral in Harbin (or the Cathedral of the Holy Wisdom of God) is the largest Eastern Orthodox Church in the Far East. Occupying an area of 721 square meters and standing at 53.3 meters, it is a former Russian Orthodox Church built in Neo-Byzantine style. The main hall is topped with a huge green tipped dome. In the sunlight, the church and the square it located look pretty like the Red Square in Moscow.

Transportation: take bus No.1, 2, 13, 15, 64, 66 or 113 and get off at Hayibai.

 

The Church of the Protection of the Mother of God in Harbin

Built in 1930, the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God is an Eastern Orthodox Church in Harbin. It is also called the Ukrainian Church. Located in the "church street", it faces Sacred Heart Cathedral of Harbin.

Chinese name: Harbin Shengmu Pingmeng Jiaotang (å"ˆå°"滨圣母帡幪教堂)
Location: 268, Dongdazhi Street, Nangang district, Harbin
Transportation: take bus No.104 and get off at Qiulin Gongsi (Qiulin Company)

 

Harbin Nangang Christian Church

Located in the "church street" along Dongdazhi Street, Harbin Nangang Christian Church is a Protestant church. Its current building was built in 1916. It is one of the important places where the Protestant activities are held.

Location: 252, Dongdazhi Street, Nangang district, Harbin
Transportation: take bus No.104 and get off at Qiulin Gongsi (Qiulin Company)

 

Hallelujah Church

Hallelujah Church was first built on Nov.11, 1998. The construction was finished on Aug.29, 2000. The church is the largest place to hold Christian activities in Northeast China. This three-storey building can accommodate over 3,000 people. It is built in modern Gothic style by combining the graceful Eastern and Western styles.

Location: 147, Youfang Street, Xiangfang district, Harbin
Transportation: take bus No.51 and get off at Zhoucheng Wenhua Gong Station, walk about 500 meters and reach Hallelujah Church.

 

Sacred Heart Cathedral of Harbin

Sacred Heart Cathedral of Harbin is a Roman Catholic Church in Harbin. Its official name is Sacred Heart of Jesus Diocesan Cathedral of Harbin.

Chinese name: Harbin Shengxin Tianzhu Jiaotang (å"ˆå°"滨圣心天主教堂)
Location: 211 Dongdazhi Street, Nangang district, Harbin
Transportation: take bus No.25, 72 or 91 and get off at Dongdazhi Jie (Dongdazhi Street)
