The lotus flower is very popular subject in Chinese culture. The lotus is of unique importance in Chinese folklore and symbolism. It is the symbol of mental purity; the lotus rises out of the muddy waters yet itself is not soiled. It is inwardly empty yet outwardly upright and smells sweet but does not have branches.
The Chinese words for lotus have the same meanings as to bind or connect (such as in marriage), one after the other, uninterrupted, to love, and modesty. Chinese paintings with lotus are elegantly painted and may include fish (prosperity) and auspicious birds.
