Plant and animal resources of Ningxia

Richly endowed soil, developed agriculture and superior natural conditions have won a reputation of the "southern plain beyond the Great Wall" for Ningxia. Crops, melons, and other fruit are doing well in the irrigated area. Chinese Wolfberry, Watermelon, apple, and grape from the irrigated area have a 15-20 percent higher sugar content than those produced in central China. The per-hectare yield of single-cropping paddy reaches 10,500 kg, placing Ningxia in front among the provinces and autonomous regions in western China and turning it into one of the nation's 12 grain production bases.

Livestock breading makes up 29 percent of the local agriculture. Of the 82,000-hectare water surfaces, 10,000 ha can be used for aquaculture. Ningxia produces various species of carp, river shrimp, and river crabs. There is a great potential for the development of aquaculture.

 

Chinese Wolfberry

Chinese wolfberry has existed in Ningxia for more than five centuries. Since being listed as a fruit in the Ming dynasty, the Ningxia Chinese wolfberry has been famous for its pure taste, high quality and largest production capacity in China. Scientific institutes also managed to develop and produce the Chinese wolfberry products as gifts for relatives and friends.

It is an invaluable traditional Chinese medicine. According to the Compilation of Material Medica, the ancient medical book, it can enrich the blood, invigorate the Yin and Yang, and relieve intense heat and cure arthritis. Also, in accordance with the scientific analysis, Chinese wolfberry is rich in carotene, riboflavin, thiamine, Vitamin C, hydrochloric acid, calcium, iron and phosphor and so forth, which is quite conducive to clearing away liver fire, nourishing the lung, supplementing the vital energy, curing eye disease and helping to resist cancer.

 


Licorice Root

The licorice root belongs to the bean family and is the perennial herb. The Ningxia licorice root is renowned for its rich in body part and powder, straight branches, fresh and dry taste, and fine processing.

It has the functions of lessening virulence of any pathogenic organism, eliminating phlegm, relieving pain and convulsion, and anticancer, and the effects of invigorating spleen and replenishing Qi, nourishing Yin and moisturizing the lung, and harmonizing all kinds of medicines.

 


Tanyang lambs

Tanyang lambs are killed in 30 days after their birth, and then the skins will be processed into refined ones, which are as thin as a piece of paper, soft and light superb-textured. The glittering and crystal-clear curly wool (up to eight centimeters) has been called as Nine Curves as it gives the impression of ripples in a lucid lake when stirred. Held upside down, the curly wool hung down naturally, as white as snow. The fur coat made with refined lambskins is the traditional export commodity for its beauty, comfort and superior property of keeping warm. Also, it can be used to make rim of high-grade clothing, having a rare elegance and charm of its own.
