RIO DE JANEIRO, May 25 (Xinhua) -- On the road against Avai in the second leg of the semfinals of the 2011 Brazilian Cup, Vasco da Gama won 2-0 on Wednesday.
The win put Vasco da Gama into the finals where it will face Coritiba.
Avai helped Vasco da Gama to score the game's first goal. Off Felipe free kick towards the goal, Avai's fullback Revson accidently headed the ball directly into the upper left side of the net, scoring in his own goal.
Vasco da Gama increased its lead in the 34th minute. On a fast break, Alecsandro passed a great ball off to a following Diego Souza who beat keeper Renan to the ball and lofted it over the diving goalie.
With its win, Vasco advances to the finals of the Brazilian Cup. The team looks to remain undefeated in the tournament. Thus far, the team has won five games and tied four. The only other teams to win the tournament undefeated were Gremio (1989, 1994, 1997), Flamengo (1990), Criciuma (1991) and Cruzeiro (2000, 2003).
The winners of the 2011 Brazilian Cup earn the berth to the 2012 Libertadores Cup, the most prestigious tournament in the Americas.
Vasco da Gama looks to win its first ever Brazilian Cup title. The team made it to the finals in 2006, but was beaten by rival Flamengo.
The first match of the finals of the Brazilian Cup will take place on June 1, followed by the return leg on June 8. The location of the first match is yet to be determined by the Brazilian Confederation of Soccer, the CBF.
