Recently, a large mass of butterflies appeared at the Shaohua Mountain Forest Park in Northwestern China’s Shaanxi Province, forming a very unique and beautiful scene.

Every year in May and June, hundreds of millions of butterflies gather in the forest. Their concentrated appearance is called “butterfly snow” by local people, since they look like snow covering the land in the distance.

According to Zhao Li, the curator of the Insect Museum of West China, a great concentration of butterflies of the same species makes it easier for them to find mates and protects them from predators.
