The first of some 30 standardized community gyms to be established in Shanghai this year opened in Putuo district on Tuesday, providing free access to local residents in the area.
Located in Yichuan community, the gym includes more than 50 training machines, including treadmills, steppers and exercise bicycles. Instructors will also be stationed at the gym to help gym-goers perfect their form.
Local residents aged 18 to 69, who hold a Shanghai hukou (household registration), or a residential card proving that individuals live in the community, are entitled to free entry, but by appointment only.
"People over the age of 50 should have a physical check before registering at the gym for their safety," Cao Peizhong, director of public fitness from the Shanghai Sports Bureau, told local media on Tuesday.
Another 100 of the gyms are also slated to be set up around town within the next five years, added Cao.
