A high school choir from the Chinese city of Shenzhen staged a concert and interacted with US high school students in the fourth largest US city of Houston on Friday.

The Shenzhen Senior High School Choir, a well-known high school choir in China, had performed in a number of countries before coming to the US to stage a concert at the Kennedy Center, Washington D.C. on Sept. 12, as the opening performance of "China: The Art of a Nation", a month-long event co-organized by the Ministry of Culture of China and the Kennedy Center.

In Houston, the 40-plus teen performers staged the concert, Flower Petals From Around the World, at the Alief Taylor High School and won warm applause from their US counterparts.

Apart from a number of traditional Chinese songs, the choir sang several foreign songs, including two popular US songs, the Rhythm of Life and I Will Follow Him, to loud applause from the audience.

After the performance, the Chinese performers also communicated with their new friends from four high schools in the Alief school district, telling them how high school life is like in China.

"Songs are a common language," said Maggie Cuellar, area superintendent of Alief school district. Cuellar called the performance an "outstanding" one that enables the American students, most of them members of school choirs, to share the love for music with their Chinese counterparts.

The Shenzhen choir had three performances in Houston.
