When Eastern and Western cultures collide, what kind of sound do they create? Renowned young Chinese singer Tan Jing attempts to offer a satisfactory answer with To London with Beijing's Blessings, a concert with Swedish rock-pianist Robert Wells at London's Royal Albert Hall on November 28.
Back in 2008, when the pair first cooperated during the Beijing Olympic Games, Tan and Wells agreed to work again for the London Olympic Games in 2012, which is being marked by a series of arts events described by organizers as an "extravaganza."
Their blend of styles is deemed appropriate for Western audiences to accept and understand Chinese music and, thus, Chinese culture.
In the Song and Dance Troupe of the PLA General Political Department, Tan Jing became a National First-Class Actress. She put on her first performance with her parents at nine and later entered the Chinese Conservatory of Music.
After graduating from the Musicology Department of the PLA Art Academy, Tan launched her career and by 2006, her solo concert Voice of Harmony was held at Vienna's Golden Hall, leading Wells to praise her as "the Oriental Sara Brightman."
Tan has supported charities including anti-drug campaigns, AIDS patients and financial aid for children in poor areas. Impressed by her work for Beijing, IOC officer Gerhard Heiberg invited Tan to sing in London to provide a link between the two Games.
Tan's efforts have drawn praise from none other than kung fu Hollywood star Jackie Chan.
"Both her morality and abilities are respectable and she is a model for me to learn from," Chan said. "Robert Wells is a world-famous pianist and composer, who will have even more new creativity performing with Tan Jing. Robert, thanks very much."
