A wealthy business tycoon, Zhou Chenghai, stabbed his wife, Bai Jing, a rising movie actress, to death over "relationship troubles" before taking his own life in their apartment in Beijing on Tuesday.
Police declined to reveal further information.
"Maybe it was a complicated personal affair but not in terms of criminal justice. The case is still being investigated and we are not going to disclose more details about the motive," a press official with the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau told the Global Times.
Bai Jing was a rising actress that has starred in popular TV series The Legend of Xiangxi and movie Kung Fu Wing Chun.
She had reportedly filed for divorce from her husband on February 13, less than two years after they tied the knot, according to the Legal Daily.
Bai claimed that Zhou had lied to her about his real age, that he was 18 years older than her and that he had a child from a previous marriage, according to the report. She also claimed he had beaten her and had had extramarital affairs.
However, an Internet user claiming to be a relative of Zhou's, said on Weibo that Bai had tried to collude with gangsters to cheat Zhou out of 20 million yuan ($3 million). He added she had forced Zhou to divorce her by gaining evidence he had visited a prostitute.
The Web user claimed this dispute had caused Zhou's mother to become upset, who had been ill and later died because of it.
Bai's friends in show business described her as a loving and family-oriented wife, according to a Hunan TV report.
Actor Gao Ziqi, who had appeared with Bai on television, said she had been a very traditional woman and expressed his disbelief at her death.
