The long-awaited Qingming Festival holiday is finally upon us, and it is not just a time for people to remember their departed loved ones; it is also a time to relax and unwind. The Global Times picked out some cool nightlife events ranging from gigs to parties that can add a touch of fun to this welcome spring break.

 

Rootin' Shootin'

Now in its fourth incarnation, the Rock! For Roots and Shoots charity concert series celebrates the idea of preserving the environment by planting trees and fostering the growth of forests. This year's show will include local bands such as The Horde, Boys Climbing Ropes, Moon Tyrant, Gone Before Now, and Banana Monkey playing non-stop rock'n'roll for seven hours. It will also feature comedy and acoustic performances for Earth Hour, and raffle prizes. Tickets are 60 yuan ($9.51) including a free drink. All the proceeds from ticket sales will go to Roots and Shoots Million Tree Project, an eco-oriented program which has helped plant over 600,000 trees in the Inner Mongolia region. Living for the Xity

Legendary Mongolian folk/rock band Hanggai will bring their iconic music, combining folk and modern styles, to Shanghai as part of the 2012 Sound of the Xity music event. Starting from April 1, this three-day event will feature a large number of young Chinese talent performing in Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an. As the highlight of this year's music event, the seven-member Hanggai will sing some of their signature numbers including "Jiu Ge" ("Drinking Song"). Electro dreams

French DJ/producer Sébastien Devaud, aka Agoria, will be playing his brand of electro-influenced techno at the club space inside the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Pudong New Area. Dubbed "the spirit of French minimalism," Agoria has worked with alongside stars such as Paul Kalkbrenner and Inner City, and has released albums including Blossom and the soundtrack Go Fast, both of which showcase his talent for creating deep and melodic techno. Fowl play

Local band Duck Fight Goose whose members include Han Han, 33, Panda and Da Men will release their new CD History, two years after their first release Sports. As one of Shanghai's best-loved bands, the group's music is heavily influenced by modern math rock and neo-psychedelic genres. The launch of their new release will also feature an appearance by support act, Stalin Gardens. Tickets are 40 yuan, including a free vinyl record. Rock on

Four indie rock bands from Beijing and Shanghai will join forces to stage a free show during the holiday. Fuzzy Mood is a new Beijing band who play British-influenced hip hop. Wanderlust is an uncompromising electro pop duo from Beijing who cultivate an 1980s retro and minimalist aesthetic with a modern twist.

Monologue by Trumpet: Tribute to Miles Davis features five skilled trumpet players from home and abroad performing a string of classic works by jazz maestro Miles Davis.
