Construction on the world's largest spokeless Ferris wheel, also China's first, will resume in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province after a six-month hiatus, the Yangtze Evening Post reported Thursday.
The continuation took place after it passed a safety assessment from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the report said.
Recently, many residents reported to the Jiangsu-based Yangtze Evening Post that the Ferris wheel in Changzhou, which has been under construction since June 2009, seemed to have been suspended after the framework was erected in 2011.
According to the plan, the wheel will be 89 meters high, weigh 3,000 tons and cost 150 million yuan ($23 million).
However, the construction site of the spokeless Ferris wheel had no workers on it when the reporter from the Yangtze Evening Post arrived at the scene on Wednesday.
Exposure to the elements had made parts of the wheel rusty, the newspaper said.
However, an official with the Changzhou Gardening and Landscape Architecture Bureau surnamed Tao denied construction was suspended Thursday.
"Workers have been making the components of the Ferris wheel in factories, so there are few workers at the construction site," Tao told the Global Times Thursday. "By the end of next month, the construction workers will be back to finish the rest of the work."
Tao said the assessment and approval process for the spokeless wheel had hindered construction.
"Authorities approved an entertainment facility, but due to the complicated nature of this structure, authorities thought it was necessary to reassess the project," Tao said.
Tao also predicted the spokeless Ferris wheel would bring considerable revenue to the park and will cover the 150 million yuan construction cost. Construction is expected to finish in 2013.
Among the top 10 highest Ferris wheels in the world, seven of them are in China. The highest Ferris wheel in the world is in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, at the height of 455 meters.
