Without further elaboration, a TV host alleged on his microblog Monday Chinese solid yogurt and jelly products are unhealthy and horrible. The post immediately sparked concerns from Web users, but was later deleted.

"According to an investigative reporter, people, especially children, better not eat old yogurt (solid state) and jelly products. The details are horrible and cannot be revealed," Zhao Pu, a host from China Central Television (CCTV) wrote on his verified Sina microblog Monday.

The post has attracted attention and anger from yogurt lovers. But the post was deleted later Monday.

"Either you say it or you keep your mouth shut. It is very unprofessional for a public figure and a media worker to make such allegations against the whole Chinese yogurt industry without supporting evidence or even any details," Wang Yu, a concerned citizen in Beijing, told the Global Times.

Also Monday, Zhu Wenqiang, a reporter with the Economic Observer newspaper, wrote on his microblog that "a friend working for the CCTV said that eating yogurt is like eating rotten leather shoes. And this year's March 15 Gala to expose business fraud had intended to expose the yogurt scandal, but, the program was not broadcast."

It is not the first time Chinese yogurt and jelly have caused public concern.

The so-called "old yogurt" is denser than common yogurt, so gelatin is used in the production process. This is also how jelly is made. But, some businessmen use industry gelatin instead of food-use gelatin for higher profits.

The industry gelatin is made of used leatherwear and is hazardous to human health because it contains heavy metal, according to a 2009 in-depth report by the Guangzhou-based Nanfang Daily.
