The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway plans to adopt a face recognition system to catch fugitives, China National Radio (CNR) reported Sunday.
Three key railway stations including Shanghai Hongqiao station, Tianjin west station and Ji'nan west station in Shandong Province are expected to install the system, which helped Beijing police apprehend around 100 suspects in a month after two Beijing railway stations adopted it in 2006, the report said.
The bidding process for the project will begin on Friday.
The China Academy of Railway Sciences held a symposium on March 2 to discuss the system's functions and uses, and evaluated the railway's security check system, the Security Manager magazine reported.
The equipment, upon completion, will be set up in the security check areas, where every passenger has to pass before entering the railway station.
The technology can automatically take photos of a person's face, focusing on the area from the brow ridge to the low jaw zone, and has a high accuracy rate, even for people who have undergone plastic surgery, according to experts.
Police officers can obtain the criminal record of a suspect by comparing his photo taken by the system with those in a criminal database.
The technology has been widely utilized in public safety areas. The Beijing Olympic Games used the face recognition system at its opening ceremony in 2008. A year later, Beijing airport adopted it to prevent people from impersonating staff members.
The Shanghai Railway Bureau could not confirm the information Sunday when reached by the Global Times.
"We haven't received any notice regarding adopting the system at Hongqiao railway station," Hu Jian, a press officer of the Shanghai Railway Bureau, told the Global Times Sunday.
